Hello world!
It's American Heart Month so, for our organization I hosted our monthly tabling event. It was very fun, very much a lot of work, and very educational. As you can see I made a whole HangBearkat game for the organization to use (until it's eventually old and unusable). I had to backtrack and relearn a lot of things that we had previously gone over in class. Here are some interesting facts about the heart and heart health:
- The heart is about the size of your fist (with your thumb inside)
- The heart has 4 chambers (two atriums and two ventricles)
- Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of related diseases that all involve the heart
- 1 in 3 US adults have one or more types of CVD making it the #1 killer of adults more than cancer, lower respiratory diseases, and accidents combined
- Every 25 seconds an American has a heart related event
- Women over the age of 55 and men over the age of 45 are at an increased risk for CVD
- The Mediterranean diet is recommended for those with CVD as it emphasizes:
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Lean meats such as poultry and fish
- Low-fat dairy
- Whole grains
- Healthy oils such as vegetable oil and soy oil
- Decreased sodium intake
- The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes or 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic (oxygen using) exercise per week which is included but not limited to:
- Brisk walking
- Running
- Cycling
- Swimming
Now of course you're not going to be perfect and everyone is going to eat a cookie or slice of cake every now and again, but that's ok. Making little changes in the diet can lead to big improvements for your health in the long run so, please do not look at this list and get discouraged, but rather encouraged to incorporate at least one of these things. <3
